Happy Summer Solstice

Sunrise in Neyyer Dam, Kerala, India

Om on all 3 planes of eternal existence, earth, atmosphere, and heavens.
O effulgent, ever-present radiance of Sun Divine,
We meditate on thy transcendental light,
Inspire and illumine our consciousness.

In celebration of the sunniest day of the year, students often face the East and do 108 Sun Salutations. Being the Kapha I am, I tend to skip over this and instead spend the day outside in the sunshine digging in my garden. It is a rare occasion that I am awake for the sunrise, though I had the magnificent opportunity to take a dark morning hike to the mountain pictured above near the Sivananda Ashram in Kerala, India.  It was a magical experience to be atop the mountain chanting as the sun crested. Though the choice is totally yours how to rejoice in the resplendent sun that makes life on Earth possible, here is an important Mantra I use.

Gāyatrī Mantra from Rigveda (III.62.10)

ॐ भूर् भुवः स्वः
तत् सवितुर्वरेण्यं ।
भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि ।
धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥

oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ
tát savitúr váreṇyaṃ
bhárgo devásya dhīmahi
dhíyo yó naḥ pracodáyāt

"Let us focus on that Ultimate Reality,
Which are the Earth, the Sky, and the Heaven.
Let us meditate on the Glory of the Divine Truth,
And may that Truth inspire our reflection. " (Patricia Walden)
