Inside our Bodies

A view "inside our bodies" according to the 3 & 4 year olds students I teach at the Temple Playschool. I particularly appreciate the bubble wrap lungs, the mess of the intestines and the vertebral alignment of the spine. What a true depiction of the human system! I only wish my brain was as open and free as these pictures and the preschoolers themselves demonstrate.

Winter & Spring Schedule

There is a rest in brokenness.
You lie on that hard ground, unable to function as you did before. So you lie there.
There are no more "shoulds" because the luxury of self recrimination was taken from you when you fell and broke to pieces on the earth below. "Cannot" doesn't matter now, either. All that exists in this moment is 'What Is Now.'
This.
And there is beauty in the brokenness.
It is a beauty of constellations in the scars, of tides in the tears, the heat of fire in the bleeding of you.
In the abrupt quiet that follows an unexpected injury, a sacred silence fills you. And because there is nothing left in you that can create, push, force, be, or drive into, there is a blessed empty space, to be filled by something other than all the crazed and busy thinking, the manic achieving, and the over-scheduled hours.
In these seasons of humble brokenness, we are opened, utterly. There is no protecting yourself here. This is the stripping away of ego-driven, striving conception.
Let there be grace.
Allow the broken places to show you their beautiful rest.
The broken stick on the forest floor is the branch who earned her rest.
I bless the stick.
I bless the branch.
I bless the rest.

Fall Schedule

So many fun and interesting things happening in my schedule this fall...

The Dream Big Teen Group starts back up again mid-October without the research component, so this yoga and group therapy class is once again open to any teen age 12-17 with a medical diagnosis.

The Sleep Well series is back and better than ever. Each week the series will include yoga paired with an additional healing modality such as massage, herbs & aromatherapy, behavioral health, and nutrition.

Gentle Yoga to Support Healing Steps continues as a series paired with the Healing Steps therapy group as a place where people living with a medical diagnosis can connect, find support, and begin to heal.

On Saturday October 4th my colleague Becca Broughton and I will be presenting the lecture "Applications of Yoga in Integrative Medicine" at 1:30pm as part of the Music City Yoga Festival.
Yoga for Truckers in action!

And lastly, I am honored to be a part of the Flex It! My Body, My Temple art event at the Parthenon happening this Monday, Labor Day, at 11am. As part of Portland, Oregon based artist Nicole Cormaci's installation Yoga for Truckers (+Everyone) I will be teaching yoga to long-haul truck drivers to bring awareness and health to long periods of sitting. This project will create both a yoga practice to do inside the cab while driving, as well as a few things to practice before and after long days on the road. The yoga session will be viewed live by gallery visitors inside the treasury room of the Parthenon on September 1st, while Nicole will continue to stay connected to yoga during her Nashville residency for the remainder of the year.

9) Biggest Life Lesson: Realizing I'm not in control of everything. The more I make space in my life to just practice and observe without attachment to outcome, the more pleasurable life experiences are. Think of practicing like gardening... You can influence the environment, add more or less water, pick sun or shade, etc, but can you actually will the plant to fruit or flower?  No, you don't have this control, but you can practice and set up good conditions, then simply enjoy whatever arises. -AW

On Vacation...

I have transformed into a mermaid for the week.
I will be by the ocean & away from my classes starting September 18th.
I return to my full teaching schedule again on Monday, September 29th.
Ahhhh...

Spring & Summer Schedule

Thank goodness spring is here!  We can begin to open our dense shells and warm ourselves in the light and space that is now filling our half of the world.  After the long winter and highly variable spring, I eagerly await these days that promise fresh air and sunshine just like my eager seedlings here ready to go in the ground. I have started with some of the cooler weather crops and in the photo you'll see lettuces, carrots, chives and many other herbs. It is now time to go plant ourselves in the earth and reach for the sunshine. Enjoy!

Update...
The bounty is beginning, though it seems that my luck is with the green vegetables thus far this year, even the pear that came off the tree in the front yard.  Hoping some shiny red tomatoes will be the next to arrive!

Winter Schedule

View from Harlem, NY
What a winter!
However I think I am beginning to see the light.  It seems to be slowly starting to fill our half of the world.  But until the spring is truly upon us, the yoga practice helps stoke our inner fire and build vitality.
